Don Kilpatrick

Research Interests:

Don Kilpatrick earned his M.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University in 2006. He moved to Detroit in 2007 to begin his career at the College for Creative Studies as a faculty member in traditional and digital illustration of which he has been the department chair since 2010.

A successful freelance illustrator, Kilpatrick's work has been featured in publications such as Fortune, the L.A. Times, and the Wall Street Journal. He was involved in the design of the Olympic medal for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He has received numerous awards from organizations such as The Society of Illustrators, and Communication Arts.

Additionally, he has exhibited his artwork in New York, Philadelphia, and Miami. The Butcher's Daughter gallery in New York City hosted Kilpatrick's most recent solo exhibition “Sing Down The Moon” in January of 2015. Kilpatrick is a founding member of The Detroit Wood Type Co., and Signal Return where he serves as a board member.

Professional Experience:

2002 Winter Olympic Games- Victory Medal art/design. Created both art and design for gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded to Olympic athletes.

2002 Winter Olympic Games- Olympic Torch design. Conceived a variety of designs for the Olympic torch, and collaborated on the final Olympic Torch design.

2002 Winter Olympic Games- Official Olympic poster art and designs.

2013 Shinola poster- illustrated and hand-printed poster promoting Shinola’s hand-built bicycles. Was created for the launch of their Detroit retail store space.

2014 “Write-A-House” poster and identity- Write-A-House is a unique writer residency program in Detroit that promotes revitalization by awarding the chosen writer-in-residence with a rebuilt home in Detroit.

Illustration Conference’s (ICON) Educator’s Symposium in Portland, Oregon in July 2014. Paper presentation-“The classroom in the 21st century community- the Illustration student as creative collaborator and entrepreneur in beleaguered cities and regions.”
