Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1971, Kyohei Abe earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from Trident College in Nagoya. After moving to the United States in 1993, he began studying photography and subsequently chose to attend CCS. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1999 and was given an Artistic Achievement Award in the same year. In May 2002 Abe earned his Master of Fine Art degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Over the past ten years, Abe has shown his work extensively in the Detroit area, as well as in Lodz, Poland; New York City; Omaha, Nebraska; and Nagoya, Japan.
Kyohei Abe is a Director and Chief Curator at the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography in Detroit, Michigan. Abe is also consultant who helps artists find the strengths in their work, identify appreciative audiences and proper presentation. Abe has been reviewing portfolios at national events including PhotoNOLA and PhotoLucida and Filter Photo festival. He recently was a juror for PhotoPlace Open 2012 as well as a juror for Critical Mass since 2010.
Abe studied Architecture in Japan, holds BFA in Photography from CCS and MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Abe also is a artist whose works are part of the public collection of the Museum Fine Art, Houston, TX, Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit, MI, The West Collection, Oak, PA as well as numerous private and corporate collections globally.
He has been exhibiting his works widely, including in New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, San Francisco, Canada, Germany, and China and most recently at the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX in 2011.
