Assistant Director of Public Relations

Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Public Relations reports to the Director of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations and is primarily responsible for elevating CCS’ visibility through media relations and other avenues of communication including the CCS website. This person gathers, writes, edits and pitches news about the College to local, regional and national print and electronic media. Working as part of the Institutional Advancement team, the ADPR will also contribute suggestions and content for the CCS internal news publication as well as for the College’s donor magazine and CCS marketing and fundraising collaterals. The ADPR will interact with faculty, staff, students, donors, alumni and others in the CCS community.

This position is part of an integrated team of fund raising, marketing and PR professionals that closely collaborates to generate the financial resources and visibility necessary for CCS to fulfill its strategic plan. The College seeks an experienced communicator, manager and project leader with the ability and desire to establish a national best-in-class PR function.

The ideal candidate for the AD of Public Relations will possess the following attributes:

  • The ability to identity communication and public relations opportunities and develop audience-appropriate messaging to support the goals and objectives in the CCS strategic plan
  • A keen news sense and ability to differentiate the appropriate level at which various news items reside – from internal information to national news potential; from the CCS website to the CCS magazine
  • The ability to create and edit written materials that are compelling to editors, reporters, and producers; the ability to plan, organize, and coordinate media activities and press events; and, a track record of success in media relations
  • The ability to think strategically, implement tactically and work independently with minimal direction
  • A track record of utilizing interpersonal skills to establish and grow effective relationships with key internal and external audiences and contacts
  • The ability to understand complex issues and translate into concise and readily understood messages – verbally and in written form – for varied audiences
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure and initiate and manage projects to completion as part of a team

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive, calendar-based public relations plan to establish and build visibility among internal and key external constituencies
  • Build a database of key media contacts, develop lasting media relationships on behalf of the College for the President and other internal leaders
  • Ensure that internal and external communication is consistent and delivered as one voice; serve as the primary keeper of the CCS key messages, fast facts and FAQ
  • Provide leadership and establish processes for the consistent dissemination of accurate and relevant content to appropriate media sources, timed to support fundraising, enrollment or brand visibility objectives
  • Manage all media relationships for CCS, consistently packaging and pitching CCS news to local, regional and national trade media as well as national mainstream media
  • Identify, propose and prep CCS spokespersons based on the media source and audience; provide staffing for all interviews and handle all follow-up
  • Create, implement, direct and oversee communication initiatives that effectively describe and promote the College’s academic and community outreach programs
  • Assist the Marketing Communication and Public Relations as well as others in the IA department in coordinating internal and external outreach to key constituencies, seamlessly integrating effort for maximum effect to all audiences
  • Work as a key team member in supporting visibility for fundraising events, CCS exhibitions, lectures and other gatherings

The following are requirements of the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of five years in business communication, newsroom or PR firm experience; established media relationships a plus
  • Superior writing and editing skills; ease and speed in gathering facts; excellence in grammar, punctuation and proofreading
  • Excellent subject matter expert interviewing skills
  • Proven ability to pitch and place stories with electronic and print news media
  • Flexibility in taking on assignments and working varied hours
  • Cultural awareness appropriate to a fast-paced, creative team environment serving the strategic needs of a nationally leading college of art and design
  • Personnel and budget management experience a plus
