CCS Experience Course
In order for students to be successful at CCS they need to have an understanding of how CCS functions, what is expected of them and what resources are available to them on campus. The leadership of the College feels very strongly about this and has incorporated the concept into our Strategic Plan. The result is the CCS Experience class.
This class is modeled after many other First Year Experience (FYE) classes and utilizes information from the National Resource Center for First Year Experience and Students in Transition. The challenges faced in college are different than at any other time in our lives and that is why this class is offered at colleges all over the world. A required course for conditionally admitted students, it will prove to be extremely beneficial for all students.
Students who successfully complete this type of class have been shown to have a higher graduation rate, be more involved on campus, have an overall higher satisfaction with the college experience, and be more involved as alumni.
Course Description:
The CCS Experience course is designed to acclimate new CCS students to campus culture, academic expectation and life as a college student. The course strives to equip new students with the skills needed to be successful students and artists/designers while providing the support needed to meet the challenges set before them by CCS. Students will be required to make weekly entries into a sketch book and journal, participate in a community service project and present in class on an assigned topic. Topics for this course will include career exploration, transitioning into college life, Blackboard (our campus intranet) training, technology on campus, presentation skills, personal budgeting, time management and community service. The course will also strive to assess student strengths and weaknesses relative to college success and to act as a support system.
CCS Experience is a 1 credit course that meets only for the first 10 weeks of the semester. It is taught by a member of the CCS staff, generally from the Student Services Divisions, and a Teaching Assistant, who is a current upper class student. Almost all of the Teaching Assistants from last year stated that they wish they had had the opportunity to take this class when they began CCS. Many of the things they had questions about throughout their first and second years were addressed in the first few weeks for students in CCS Experience.
