Alumni Exhibitions
This spring, Center Galleries featured an exhibition called, "All the Splendors of the Earth."
The project was organized by recent CCS alumni and their collaborators living and working in New York City. Participants included Brian Clifton (CD '04), Bridget Finn (PH '05), Kyle Knodell (PH '05), Kylie Lockwood (FA '05), Nolan Simon (FA '05), Joshua Smith (PH '05), Dylan Spaysky (FA '07), Jeffery Tranchell (FA '05).
Additionally, Center Galleries' Alumni and Faculty Hall featured the exhibition, "The Temari of Sharon Thieman (CR '84)." An ancient Japanese art form, Temari is described as "embroidering the surface of a ball." To learn more about Sharon and her Temari work, visit her website www.originallythieman.com.
Deborah Kashdan (FA '80) took part in a number of events and exhibitions during the course of the last year. They included, "Fear" at Work Detroit, January 10-February 18, 2009;"Icon" at Work Detroit, September-October, 2008; Scarab Club Photography Exhibition, October-November, 2008; Scarab Club "Voices," September-October, 2008; "Andres Serrano Picks Detroit," Center Galleries, September-October, 2008; "Urban Edge" & "Images of Mothers," Grosse Pointe Art Center in 2008. Additionally, Deborah was awarded 2nd place in a Scarab Club Metal Exhibition in February/March, 2009. She also served as a presenter at Pecha-Kucha Night Detroit, Volume 3 at the Hard Rock Cafe on February 19. Deborah will be in an upcoming show at Motor City Brewing Works beginning on July 1.
David Flaugher is in an exhibition entitled, “Marketing” at Org Contemporary gallery in Detroit’s Russell Industrial Center. The show will run through July 25. David describes himself "as a critical skeptic who feels most comfortable communicating through material plays and arrangements." Andy Kem (ID '02) was awarded first place in the "Design Quest 2008 Design Competition" last fall for his table, 'Breakplane.' See images at http://www.designquest.biz/gallery/furncomp08/. Additionally, Andy was part of the annual design show at Detroit Artists Market (view here) and had a solo show at Re:View Contemporary Gallery in Detroit. For images and information, click here.
Matthew Hanna (FA '86) was in a number of shows during the spring. His solo painting exhibition, "Rhus Typhina L," was on display at the Majestic Cafe in Detroit during the month of May. Additionally, he is a participant in the SouthWest Creative Network's "Our Creative Lives" at the Lady Bug gallery in Detroit; in "Actual Size Preamble" at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit; and in "Collected," a collective exhibition at the Anton Art Center in Mount Clemens, Michigan.
Next Step Galleries & Studio in Ferndale, Michigan hosted its annual group exhibition, "Spring Happening '09." The show was curated this year by Narine Kchikian (FA '97) and featured the work of a number of local artists, including CCS alumni April Wagner (CR-GL '97), Emily Duke (CR-CE '09) and Kaiser Suidan (CR-CE '92).
