Student Activities

The Office of Student Life provides a variety of social and educational programs and activities for students.

Blue Monkey Slide Show
A visit from the famous Blue Monkey Sideshow generally kicks-off the beginning of fall semester. As part of the weekly Tuesday Music Series, local bands perform at lunchtime in the CCS cafeteria. The cafeteria is also the site of an open-mike competition and periodic free mini massage sessions.

Holidays
Halloween brings costume and pumpkin carving contests, while Valentine's Day, Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day offer unique opportunities for creative celebrations. In April, Spring is welcomed with an all campus carnival complete with psychics, food, games, and music.

Student Activities
Campus activities are free for students, and advertised through monthly calendars, student emails, and flyers posted around campus. Students are also entitled to free general admission to the Detroit Institute of Arts. At the Student Activities Corner, located in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), activities such as knitting classes, lunch-time movies, drum circles, and yoga classes are held.

Fitness Room
A fitness room, complete with cardio and weight equipment, and cable television, is located in the Art Centre Building (ACB). The fitness room is available for use by all students during the academic year. CCS students are also qualified for membership at the Wayne State University Recreation and Fitness Center. Opportunities to play soccer, flag football, pool, and ping-pong also exist.

Health and Wellness
Health screenings and programs highlighting self-image, eating disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, and sexual assault are sponsored on campus. The Office of Student Life offers free wellness brochures on various health and welfare topics. Students are encouraged to stop in and get a brochure or speak with Student Life staff.

Giving Back
Giving back to the community is an important value students are exposed to in various ways. Twice a year CCS hosts an American Red Cross blood drive. Pumpkins carved for the Halloween contest are donated to a local children's shelter. The children are then invited to trick or treat on campus.

Complaints and Suggestions

Occasionally, you may feel that there is a breakdown in communication or a difference in point of view with another student, faculty, or staff member. If attempts to discuss the matter with the party involved do not result in a resolution, or you wish to make a complaint or suggestion, it is important to know where to go for help. In most cases, your department chair or the Office of Student Life staff can help. Regardless, you should address your concerns with someone who can help.
