English Path Information and Course Descriptions

Professional Artists

To succeed as a professional artist, you will need strong communication skills, both oral and written. The curriculum at CCS is designed to foster the development of those skills in every student.

To succeed as a student at CCS, you will need those same communication skills. Many of your courses—especially your liberal arts courses in English, history, art history, and the social sciences—will require you to write essays, research papers, and essay exams.

Good Writing Skills=Success

To ensure that you have the writing skills necessary to succeed in your classes at CCS and in your career as a professional artist, we offer various introductory writing courses for entering freshmen students.

  • ELS 107: Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English challenges non-native speakers of English to write a well planned, cogent, college-level essay in Standard English. The course stresses basic foundational skills in writing, with an integrated focus on strengthening English reading, listening, and speaking skills. Successful completion of this course (grade C or better) moves students along to the next course, DEN 108: Composition II: The Art of Argumentation.
  • DEN 107: Composition I: Writing Workshop is an introductory course which challenges students to write well planned, cogent, college-level essays in Standard English. Successful completion of this course (grade C or better) moves students along to the next course, DEN 108: Composition II: The Art of Argumentation.
  • DEN 108: Composition II: The Art of Argumentation builds upon skills mastered in DEN 107 and challenges students to read/ assess a variety of written and visual texts and then respond in a college-level essay incorporating carefully crafted research and argumentation.
