There are a number of buses and taxis that run throughout Detroit. When using public transportation, it's a good idea to check fares, stops, and schedules ahead of time.

Banking

The following banking information is intended as a general guide. Details should be obtained from the bank's customer service office, as requirements differ by bank. Banks mentioned below were chosen for their convenient location or because they are frequently used by CCS students.

We suggest opening a checking and/or savings account. Using personal checks to pay for rent, utilities, food, and supplies is the easiest way to keep track of your expenses.

When choosing a bank, consider the following:

  • ATM availability
  • Business hours
  • Check-cashing policies (length of time it will take to clear an out-of-state check, cost of services, etc.)
  • Charges for penalties such as overdrafting
  • Requirements for maintaining an account in good standing

When opening an account, most banks will ask for two pieces of identification: a driver's license, passport, green card, voter registration card, or CCS ID.

The following may also be required:

  • Banking Reference: Name, address, and phone number of your last bank.
  • Employment Reference: Names, addresses, and phone numbers of previous employers.
  • Minimum Deposit: Depending on the bank and type of account, this could be as much as $500.

If you have not previously had a bank account or job, you may have difficulty opening a bank account. However, some banks may allow you to substitute an employment reference with CCS enrollment verification, such as CCS ID or a letter from the Office of Registration.
