Toyota Lecture Series Presents Cynthia E. Smith

Date: March 28 Cynthia E. Smith, Curator for Socially Responsible Design, Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum “Design and the Other 90%: CITIES” Modern design has historically served 10% of the world’s population, those who primarily live in the most advanced sectors of the global economy. But what of those whose need for creative design solutions is just as and perhaps even more compelling, those whose living standards would be dramatically improved by design solutions? Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum Curator Cynthia E. Smith has explored this topic in the groundbreaking exhibition “Design for the Other 90%.” The second in the series, “Design with the Other 90%: Cities,” was on view this past Fall at the United Nations in New York City. It looks at ways in which design is helping to provide solutions for the challenges created by the rapid growth of informal settlements over the next 20 years. Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times called the exhibition “inspiring.” Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from The Ohio State University and Master’s of Public Administration from Harvard University. She has lectured on socially responsible design the world over and has curated numerous exhibitions, including the Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Triennial. Click here to RSVP. Website:
