Alumnus opens 1XRUN gallery in Eastern Market

When CCS alumnus Dan Armand closed his 323East Gallery in Royal Oak last year, many of his patrons were wondering where he and his partner may set up their new shop. Much to their delight, Armand expanded his business to a larger building in Detroit’s Eastern Market district and officially opened the latest incarnation of his gallery called 1XRUN.

Core77 features CCS student's growler design

CCS graduating senior Herald Urena noticed a friend carrying a growler of their favorite brew and immediately was interested in how he could improve upon the vessel. Having done research, Urena noticed that today’s growler hasn’t changed significantly for decades, so he set out to come up with a new and improved design.

Trans students develop virtual window for Army officials

Students in CCS’s Transportation Design program met with officials from the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) as well as experienced Army officers and soldiers for a brainstorming session on how to create a video display unit that allows soldiers to view their outside surroundings from inside their vehicle before dismounting.

Community + Public Arts Detroit teams up with artists to upgrade local parks

For the past six years, CCS’s Community + Public Arts Detroit (C+PAD) has been working with six neighborhoods within the Skillman Good Neighborhood Initiative to commission public art works that meet the desires of each neighborhood. Rather than commission works that come from an artist’s individual vision, C+PAD first asks neighborhoods what they want, and then facilitates and funds the process of finding artists who can meet those needs.

WardsAuto announces finalists in interiors design competition

Young stylists were given the task of creating a roomy, practical family-sedan cabin aimed at first-time buyers in the year 2025. The finalists were slected by top auto industry designers at Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and General Motors.

Community Arts Partnership efforts featured by Model D

CCS’s Community Arts Partnership (CAP) providesarts education to more than 4000 Detroit students each year. With the help of CCS students and alumni the program has grown and thrived in a city where arts education has been cut from many schools. Their efforts don’t go unnoticed. Recently the folks at Model D featured CAP in on online article that focuses on the offerings of CAP and other city art programs.

CCS students take part in brainstorming session to break down creative barriers

Over Christmas break a group of CCS students in Tom Rooney’s class sat down with Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) engineers along with highly experienced Army warrant officer from Fort Lee, VA to collaborate on ideas for two current proejcts: a Mobility Demonstrator and a Virtual Window for armored vehicles.

CCS students help redesign the hospital gown

CCS Product Design students Patrick Houin, Frantz Mondesir and Callie Clark-Galster worked with alum Michael Forbes, design director at Henry Ford Innovation Institute, to redesign the hospital gown. Recently Henry Ford revealed the new gown to the media and immediately professionals and patients were impressed with the work the students created.

Alum Coley McLean featured for her work at WCC

In addition to working as full-time welding and fabrication instructor at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Coley McLeanis co-founder with painter Simone DeSousa of the Salt-Mine Studio, a multidisciplinary studio occupying 4,000-square-feet at the Russell Industrial Center in Detroit, where she has held her sculpture, welding and fabrication, and casting studio practice since 1998. She was recently featured in an article in the Washtenaw Voice. McLean discuss how welding saved her life and how she pours passion not only into her work, but also into teaching the next generation of artists.

Alums Marco Terenzi and Kate Silvio featured in Gallery One show

Alums Marco Terenzi and Kate Silvio are the featured artists in Gallery One’s current show “Emerging Artists: Michigan.” The show, which opened on April 8 and runs through April 27, takes a step back from a regional focus and showcases the work of artists from across Michigan. Following in line with Gallery One’s previous “Emerging Artists” installations, the artists featured have something to say about life and use interesting, various techniques to say it.

Advertising students bring home Addy Awards

Once again CCS’s Advertising Department has dominated the student category of the District 6 American Advertising Federation’s ADDY Awards

The ADDY Awards represent the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from media of all types, creative by all sizes, and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world. The AAF Student ADDY Awards Competition is a unique national awards program designed especially for college students.

Culture Lab Detroit presents an evening of conversation and collaboration

Culture Lab Detroit was conceived as a catalyst for conversations and collaborations between Detroit’s artists, designers, technologists, and ther larger design world. It is hoped that these shared experience will increase awareness and the imprint of Detroit’s creative community internationally.

Scott Daniel Design featured in World Interior News

Scott Daniel Design, a Brooklyn-based studio headed by CCS alum Scott Daniel Strickstein is featured in World Interior News' website. Scott Daniel Design launched in 2010 in tandem with his experiments to create Cmesh™. Inspired by the idea of alchemy, Cmesh transforms common substances into something of great value, allowing him to explore notions of sculpture, design and architecture while maintaining an intimate, hands on, approach.

Local Students Win National Recognition in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the country’s longest-running and most prestigious award and recognition program for creative teenagers, announced its 2013 National Award recipients. These young artists and writers join a prestigious list of Awards alumni including Zac Posen, Lena Dunham, Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Redford.
