DETROIT, September 26, 2011 – Members of the CCS community celebrated with an afternoon reception yesterday as noted author, journalist and broadcaster Mitch Albom presented a $60,000 scholarship check to CCS freshman Sherell Garrison and revealed his plan to cultivate the ‘Detroit Dozen.’ “The Detroit Dream Fund Scholarship is to make sure that as we talk about the future of Michigan being about creative industries, kids without means from Detroit don’t get left behind,” says Albom. “Talent knows no economic status. That’s why I’m challenging authors, musicians, actors, visual artists and business people who have been nurtured by this community. I’d like to find 11 people to partner with me by the end of December to provide “Detroit Dozen” scholarships for art education in Detroit.” The first recipient of the Detroit Dream Fund Scholarship is 17 year old Fine Arts Major Sherell Garrison. She is from Detroit’s Westside and she graduated from the Detroit School of the Arts with honors. Since 1991, the Mitch Albom Dream Fund endowment at CCS has provided more than $115,000 in funding for more than 50 Detroit children to participate in the arts. Each Detroit Dream Fund scholar is required to work on a public art project in the summer as a way of giving back to the City of Detroit. A second scholarship is already in progress because the president of a local business heard about the challenge on the radio and decided to participate.
