CCS coordinates public arts projects to enhance Detroit neighborhoods

10/28/08

Recognizing that public art is a vital part to any vibrant community the Skillman, JP Morgan Chase and Kresge foundations have funded community+public arts:DETROIT Initiative (CAPD). This city wide initiative brings public art projects to six Detroit neighborhoods - Osborn on the city's northeast side, the North End near Highland Park and the Lodge Freeway, the Vernor and Chadsey/Condon areas of Southwest Detroit and Brightmoor and Cody-Rouge on the city's northwest side.

Coordinated by CCS's Sioux Trujillo, CAPD pairs young people and community members with established Detroit artist's in each of the key neighborhoods, the teams are tasked with developing art that fits the personality of their community. The Skillman Foundation also asked CCS students to design light pole banners that reflect the individuality of each of the neighborhoods. The banners will be hung in the fall of 2008.

The public art and banners will be unveiled in each neighborhood with upcoming free, public receptions:
