English Placement
Determining Your English Placement
Beginning in the Fall 2011 semester, the College for Creative Studies will use the ACT English results to determine English class placement at CCS. Below are the cut-off scores that will determine where students will place in their English course
ACT ENGLISH
20 or below - DEN 107, Composition I: Writing Workshop
21 or higher - DEN 108, Composition II: The Art of Argumentation
30 or higher - DEN 239, Survey of World Literature
For students who do not have the ACT English test result, we will be using the SAT Writing Score. See the SAT course cut-off scores below:
SAT WRITING
470 or below - DEN 107, Composition I: Writing Workshop
471-670 - DEN 108, Composition II: The Art of Argumentation
671 or higher - DEN 239, Survey of World Literature
TRANSFER STUDENTS
If you have transferred in a college level English composition course or have Advanced Placement Credit equivalent to DEN 108, you do not need to be concerned with your English Placement.
ENGLISH PLACEMENT EXERCISE
Students who have not taken the ACT English or the SAT Writing exam are required to take an English Placement Exercise at the College for Creative Studies. Please see the details below:
WHAT: THE ENGLISH PLACEMENT EXAM (EPE)
WHERE: CCS, Walter B. Ford Bldg. 1st Floor – Auditorium.
THE DETAILS: Check-In @ 8:30 am, Test starts @ 9:00 am (Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long). Please specify any special testing needs. There is no study preparation necessary. This is a placement test based on your writing & comprehension skills.

WHY: Students who have not taken the ACT English exam or the SAT Writing exam are required to take the English Placement Exercise to determine your English class placement at CCS. Students will place into one of the following English courses:
- ELS 107 - Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English
- DEN 107 - Composition I: Writing Workshop
- DEN 108 - Composition II: The Art of Argumentation
- DEN 239 - Survey of World Literature
- Wednesday, August 31, 2011 English Placement Exercise
