The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is a national non-profit organization established in 1994 to identify, motivate and validate the next generation of young artists and writers. The Alliance tracks the creative development of teenagers across the country each year through The Scholastic Art &Writing Awards program. This program is the longest running recognition program for creative young people in the country.
The awards were launched in 1923 by Scholastic, Inc., the global children's publishing and media company, to encourage, foster and reward creativity in our nation's classrooms. Each year, students who excel in the visual arts and creative writing have the chance to earn recognition, get their work exhibited or published and to earn scholarships.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Each year, more than 77,000 students in grades 7– 12 participate in The Awards. The process begins across the country as young artists and writers submit more than 140,000 creative works to a network of Regional Affiliates that locally present The Awards. The most outstanding works of art and writing from each region are forwarded to New York City to be assessed on a national level. Professional jurors review approximately 8,000 works of art and 2,000 manuscripts to select the 1,000 national award recipients. Graduating seniors who submit a body of work in the Portfolio categories compete for local and national scholarships bestowed by the regions, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and a network of arts institutes, colleges and universities. Fifteen $1000 awards are presented to sponsoring teachers of Art & Writing Portfolio Gold Medalists and two teachers will earn special $1000 awards for submitting the greatest number of National Award-winning submissions in art and writing. The national exhibit is held at the World Financial Center and award celebration at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
