Operating at the intersection between the worlds of fine art and design, the CCS Crafts Department offers students a unique opportunity to grow and explore. Many of the objects you create will be functional – teapots, jewelry, glassware, or hand-woven clothing. Others will be unclassifiable, unforgettable and beautiful – intriguing art objects that take advantage of the wide range of materials available in crafts.
There are an amazing variety of paths available to you in the Crafts Department, from working in ceramics or fibers to glass or metals. At the heart of each path are the same primary motivations: an appreciation of the beauty and expressive potential of handmade objects, and a desire to express your ideas through experimentation with a variety of materials.
Students will study both functional and fine art applications through a combination of lectures and studio classes. By the end of their sophomore year, students typically begin to concentrate in one of the five disciplines offered. In all five areas, our excellent facilities – from the metal shop and foundry to our hot glass and ceramics studios – provide the necessary tools.
