Foundation

Here you learn:

  • Drawing - learn to develop and express ideas visually
  • Design Concepts - learn language and principals we work with in 2D and 3D
  • Digital Fundamentals - ability to develop ideas with contemporary tools
  • Materials & Processes - obtain training and certification for our shops and access to skills and techniques outside of their major

Where you'll begin:

First-year students in all majors will take courses in the Foundation Department. Focused studies introduce fundamentals in Drawing, Design Concepts, Digital Fundamentals, and Materials and Processes.

Imagine the ability to share what you see in your mind...quickly, convincingly, in your own style. It's in the basics. Every artist and designer needs to know not only how to manipulate the physical materials and spaces they work with, but what choices are available to them. They must be able to express themselves using traditional tools as well as newer digital tools, and they must know how to critique; how to step back, and analyze their work. That is what the renowned CCS Foundation program is all about.

Any major you choose at CCS will grow from the roots you develop through the Foundation Department program. As a first-year student, you will be introduced to the basic techniques, principles, and materials that you will use throughout your studies and career.

Foundation is a unique department, drawing faculty members across a variety of disciplines in art, crafts and design. Visiting artists and guest lecturers contribute as well, expanding the breadth of perspectives and experience.
