Thirty Metro Detroit Artists Working in Live Arts and Film & Music to Receive a total of $550,000

Metro Detroit artists working in Live Arts and Film & Music disciplines are invited to apply for a 2022 Kresge Artist Fellowship.

In 2022, Kresge Arts in Detroit will award 20 fellowships and 10 Gilda Awards to artists of all career stages living and working in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Kresge Artist Fellowships are $25,000 no strings attached awards, plus professional development support and the creation of a short film highlighting the artist’s work. These fellowships as well as the $5,000 Gilda Awards will be divided between the two categories—Live Arts and Film & Music—based on the number of applications received in each category.

LIVE ARTS
Dance, Choreography, Theatre Directing, Playwriting, Performance Art, and Interdisciplinary Work
FILM & MUSIC
Film Directing, Screenwriting, Animation, Music Composition, Music Performance, Sound Art, and Interdisciplinary Work

“Applying allowed me to reflect on how I perceive the work I do and its impact. The application process brought awareness to what I have accomplished and helped me see a clear path to where I’m going,” said 2020 Kresge Artist Fellow Karilú Alarcón Forshee. “I was able to narrow my mission to its substance.”

Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients are selected by independent panels of distinguished local and national artists and arts professionals. Previous applicants are strongly encouraged to re-apply, as new panels—with fresh perspectives—are convened each year.

Michael Manson, a dancer and 2020 Kresge Artist Fellow said, “Throughout my journey, I was fortunate to build relationships with amazing people and obtain numerous opportunities to help expand my artistic visions. I highly encourage others to apply.” To prospective applicants he recommends, “do your research and never stop challenging yourselves. I was nervous about applying for my first fellowship, but I took a chance and here I am…”
