What’s Jenny Risher’s proudest moment? Looking up in Times Square and seeing five of her photographs on enormous billboards illuminating the night sky.
“Photography is an extension of who I am,” said Risher, whose photos have been used by international fashion brands, advertising agencies and editorial publications for clients in Detroit, New York and Los Angeles. “From the time I started taking photography classes through an afterschool program in middle school, I never doubted my desire to pursue this career.”
Risher relocated to New York City shortly after graduation to develop her portfolio and assist other accomplished photographers. Since then, her list of clients has grown to include DKNY, Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, Jack Spade, Hanes Corporation, Shiseido Cosmetics, Victoria's Secret, Verizon and Kenneth Cole Productions. Her photos have been published in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Noise, Marie Claire, Curve, Parents, Redbook, Hour and Mens Health magazines. She works on a freelance basis and is represented by M Represents in New York.
“One of the best ways to emerge as a photographer is to seek out the best and try to assist them,” Risher advised. “Not only will it teach you more about the field, but you will also have the opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes. The life of a photographer is 90 percent business and 10 percent craft. It’s critical to be well rounded.”
Although Risher now lives in New York, she is proud of her Michigan roots. She recently celebrated the release of her first book Heart Soul Detroit, inspired by a conversation with friend and fashion icon Veronica Webb. The book features portraits and stories of the 50 most iconic sports, music and business superstars to come from the Motor City. Among them are Eminem, Iggy Pop, Smokey Robinson, Jack White, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Lily Tomlin, Alice Cooper, Bill Ford Jr, Lee Iacocca, and Tim Allen. The photos Risher shot for the book are now being exhibited across the country.
