Chair of MFA Interaction Design

The College for Creative Studies is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and experienced individual to lead the MFA Interaction Design program.

You will be able to demonstrate high levels of creativity, with in-depth technological knowledge and the application of coding as a creative medium. You will recognize design as an empowering factor in advancing societal and environmental change. You will have experience of professional practice and be able to prepare our students for employment or as independent creative practitioners. You will be an experienced teacher and academic leader and be able to oversee and deliver an exceptional student learning experience.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The MFA Interaction Design program teaches students the principles and techniques used in designing effective technology-led interactions between humans and the objects, spaces and interfaces that constitute our daily surrounds. The program offers a 60-credit curriculum that is unique in the specific ways it integrates user-centric research, business practices, and creative design studio courses to simulate the professional environment in the classroom. The curriculum emphasizes:

  • Practice-based creative studio learning with hands-on experience of sketching and prototyping with hardware and software;
  • The teaching of interaction design theory and its various technological applications with respect to a range of design solutions;
  • The usage of current user-centered research methods, tools, and techniques related to understanding human behavior, performance, and cognition and their impact on user adoption;
  • The execution of functionally appropriate and aesthetically compelling interaction design solutions that respond to user needs and to current and emerging market opportunities;
  • A broad awareness of issues, trends and developments in business, technology, design and other related areas in order to succeed in a dynamic future.


The Graduate Interaction Design curriculum integrates interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as industry-sponsored projects designed to mirror the professional studio and current business challenges. The final academic year concludes with the Graduate Thesis, designed to help students execute a body of work that is the culmination of their graduate studies and experience.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Chair will teach two graduate courses per semester and be responsible for:

  • Further development of the graduate academic curriculum and keeping the program abreast of industry advancements;
  • Hiring and managing graduate faculty;
  • Managing the overall learning experience and leadership of the Graduate Interaction Design program;
  • Recruiting a diverse student body in collaboration with the Director of Graduate and International Admissions;
  • Academic guidance and mentoring of graduate students;
  • Serving as thesis advisor to graduate students; and
  • Developing strong corporate, foundation, and other external partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Reporting to the Dean of Graduate Studies, you will be a highly accomplished design professional with proven experience in interaction design across a wide range of industries. You will be familiar with global trends and be able to link the core competencies of interaction design education (i.e., aesthetics, research, user experience, coding, and their commercial application) to emerging markets and technology. You will have:

  • A Master's Degree (MFA, MBA, MS) in Interaction Design, Creative Computing, Entertainment Arts or other digital media-related fields. A PhD is desirable but not essential. A Bachelor's Degree will be considered if the candidate has significant professional experience in Interaction Design with in-depth understanding of user-centered research, usability testing, product evaluation, and their application as demonstrated in a portfolio of work;
  • Teaching experience at the college or graduate level in a studio/creative lab learning environment;
  • In-depth knowledge of coding, programming, and prototyping with software and hardware (Arduino, Raspberry Pi etc.);
  • In-depth knowledge of prototyping at various levels, from low-level cardboard prototypes, to high-fidelity working products/applications/systems;
  • Experience in practice-based research and consultancy;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team leader and colleague;
  • Ability to work across departments in interdisciplinary collaborative projects both internally and externally.
