POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Global Programs Advisor in the office of International Student Services is responsible for advising all outgoing and incoming study abroad and exchange students, as well as visiting scholars. In addition, the position will be the primary driver of study abroad programs at CCS, including faculty led short courses.

The Global Programs Advisor is responsible for developing and providing pre-departure programs to all study abroad students and scholars, and will manage the assessment of our Global program offerings. In addition, The Advisor will implement all study abroad related policies. The Advisor will also work closely with the Director of International Student Services to develop experiential learning initiatives surrounding Study Abroad. 

The Global Programs Advisor is considered the J-1 Visa expert at the college and is expected to remain current in all J-1 Visa requirements, monitor compliance, and issue all DS2019 forms

This position contributes significantly in the planning, and delivery of the Orientation program for all incoming international and exchange students. In addition, the Advisor will execute programming for International Education Week. The Global Programs Advisor will provide excellent student centered support and assist with college wide retention efforts as required.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Advise outgoing students on study abroad options and the admissions procedures
  • Process admission, and visa documents for incoming exchange students 
  • Work with the admissions office, academic advising office, and academic departments to ensure a smooth transition for incoming Exchange Students 
  • Contribute to the support of the incoming international student body by playing a significant role in coordinating New International Student Orientation in Fall, and winter
  • Maintain contact with study abroad students during their experience abroad, as well as upon return
  • Administer the CCS Global Funds Scholarship Program 
  • In cooperation with The ISSO Director, and academic departments, develop and manage short term faculty led programs abroad 
  • Maintain responsibility for implementing all policies related to study abroad
  • Promote Study Abroad opportunities on campus, meet target enrollment goals, and advocate for international education
  • Take the lead on CCS’ International Education Week on campus events 
  • Work with the ISSO Coordinator to update and develop internal and external websites, and forms related to Study Abroad, Exchange Programs, and Faculty Led trips
  • With the ISSO Director manage International Partner Contracts 
  • Represent the ISSO at College functions and events 
  • Develop and implement a pre-departure Study Abroad orientation 
  • Serve at the Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in the SEVIS database 
  • Stay current on J-1 Visa requirements, and regulations
  • Develop and implement the co-curricular assessment tools 
  • Develop proficiency in CCS curriculum, use of Ellucian & Self Service the College’s administrative databases, for student records, and business functions
  • Assist with International Studies office support (phone coverage, filing, front desk coverage)
  • Work cooperatively across campus with Students, Enrollment and Student Services Offices, Department Administrators, Chairs, Faculty and Mentors
  • Maintain an open door policy for all students needing assistance
  • Perform additional duties as required

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 2-4 years of study abroad and/or faculty led travel programs advising
  • Strong Interest or experience in Visual Arts and Design Education preferred
  • Experience in International Education programming
  • General J1 Visa regulatory knowledge preferred 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a high level of tact, empathy and diplomacy
  • Second language proficiency valued but not required
  • Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with faculty, staff, and students, and to use sound judgment
  • Ability to serve as a Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in SEVIS
  • Comfortable with public speaking 
  • Proficient computer skills are required, Adobe Acrobat, Word, Google, Excel, Powerpoint 
  • Experience in higher education databases and platforms, Colleague, Canvas, WebAdvisor/Student Planning, and ImageNow, preferred

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to maintain a stationary position, use a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and virtually.  Frequent interaction with others, including staff, faculty, students and third parties is required.  The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places.  The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required.  CCS will make reasonable accommodations that will allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
