Interior Design Faculty

 

STATUS: Full-Time, 9 months
DIVISION: Undergraduate Studies
REPORTS TO: Chair, Interior Design
FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The College for Creative Studies (CCS) invites applications for a full-time interior design faculty member. This position reports to the Chair of the Interior Design Department within the Undergraduate Studies Division. The faculty member is responsible for providing appropriate pedagogy to ensure student success in the field and assisting the Department Chair in expanding and growing the department. Rank and compensation are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: Teach three classes per semester during the academic year and advise undergraduate students with a focus in interior design. The faculty member must have the ability to teach studio-based and lecture courses with an emphasis on space planning, furniture and fixture placement, color and materials design, and construction specification. Experience in related fields such as exhibit design, transportation interiors design, and stage design are a plus. The candidate will be proficient in digital technology and able to implement for design and proofing. A commitment to sustainable, wellness design and social responsibility are additional requirements. 

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Teach courses as assigned by the department, in accordance with curricular goals and criteria established by the department and the College.
  • Teach three 3-credit courses per semester. At least one-third of a faculty member’s teaching load must be in the department to which the faculty member is appointed.
  • Prepare and distribute to students, in each course taught, a written syllabus describing the goals, objectives, and expectations of the class. A syllabus must be prepared in the standard format requested by the Office of the Provost. 
  • Adhere to best teaching practices:
    • Demonstrate effectiveness as educators, evincing a thorough and up-to-date understanding of their field/discipline and pedagogical practices.
    • Clearly communicate course-specific content as determined by their respective departments.
    • Manifest openness to innovative practices that enhance student learning, including technological advancements in pedagogy.
    • Adhere to learning outcomes and assessment practices that have been established by their respective departments and the College.
    • Determine that the classroom is properly set up for each session.
    • Arrive punctually and remain throughout the entire class.
    • Mentor students regarding their professional and academic goals.
    • Conduct timely evaluations of students, including grading, according to policies and criteria established by the department and the College.
    • Acquaint students with the proper use of materials and equipment, as appropriate.
  • Seek or participate in sponsored projects, where appropriate to their respective departments. The Chair of each department has the discretion to determine whether a sponsored project meets the educational objectives

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in a related field to content being taught

or: Master’s degree in unrelated fields and an additional minimum of 18 graduate credits in a field related to the content being taught.

or: A bachelor’s degree in a related field to content being taught and a combination of:

  • A minimum of six years, working in the field of industry of the content area being taught and;
  • Evidence of recognized accomplishment in area being taught, including awards, bibliography of publication referencing design or art work or scholarship or;
  • Evidence of scholarly/creative accomplishment in terms of completed design work, patents, exhibitions, presentations, publication, and juried recognition at the regional, national and international level or;
  • Evidence of service to the field in terms of memberships on committees or boards of professional organizations and other contributions to the field.

or: A bachelor’s degree in a related field to content being taught and NCIDQ certification.
