Product Design Full-Time Faculty Member
The College for Creative Studies (CCS) invites applications for a full-time faculty position with expertise in Product Design. This position reports to the Chair of Product Design within the Undergraduate Studies Division. The faculty member is responsible for providing appropriate pedagogy to ensure student success in the field and assisting the Department Chair in expanding and growing the department. The faculty member works with the Department Chair to provide ongoing evaluation and enhancement of the current program curriculum, as well as contributes to new curriculum and program development. The faculty member takes an active role in the CCS learning community at large. The faculty member teaches three courses per semester. Rank and compensation are commensurate with experience. Start date: January 2019.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Product Design department offers a fully accredited Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design. The department has nearly 130 undergraduate students. The program aims to ensure that each graduate possesses the skills to be effective in a team environment, take initiative, lead, make ethical decisions, interpret the socio-economic factors that drive change, create aesthetically pleasing work, and be problem-solvers who are flexible and adaptive to rapid change - a graduate who is an innovator, creative thinker and a future leader.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform the duties of a full-time faculty member as described in the Handbook for Full-Time Faculty, including teach three classes per semester during the academic year in the full range of product design, including studio courses, research-based sponsored projects, skills-based courses, and sustainable and environmentally responsible design processes;
- Develop curriculum, advise and serve as a mentor to students, serve on faculty committees as assigned, and participate in faculty governance and other activities of the Department and College, as requested;
- Uphold high academic standards and encourage the free expression of divergent points of view in class;
- Maintain a professional practice and personal research agenda to keep abreast of best practices, techniques, and trends in the discipline and ensure that pedagogy at CCS remains at a superior level;
- Cultivate and maintain relationships within the local and national product and industrial design industries, and assist with developing resources for the department;
- Maintain a professional level of responsibility in relation to requirements and deadlines. Specifically:
maintain posted weekly office hours and otherwise be available to assist enrolled students in the completion of assignments; provide timely feedback and evaluation to students, including making assignment and cumulative grades available in a timely manner;
- Attend and participate in scheduled Department and College-wide meetings and functions, as well as student registration, orientation, Commencement, and CCS Information Sessions and other recruiting activities;
- Perform other duties as required by the Department Chair, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Provost, or the President.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Applicants must possess a terminal degree (MFA or an equivalent degree) in Product or Industrial Design. Candidates with an undergraduate degree and substantial professional experience and demonstrable skills may also be considered. Candidates are expected to be active, practicing professionals with a distinguished record of excellence in product design and leadership ability, and should possess a strong desire to make significant contributions to the design practice and education. The successful candidate will have the following:
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in design practice and research.
- Minimum of 2 years college teaching experience preferred.
- Solid 2D/3D visualization skills.
- Knowledge of 3D digital modeling and rapid prototyping.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Adobe Creative suite, with an emphasis on Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Communication, storytelling and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of traditional design principles and emerging opportunities in the area of user experience, interaction, entrepreneurship, and social innovation.
- Preference given to candidates with demonstrated knowledge and commitment to design issues related to sustainable processes, participatory design, and research projects.
