Wood / Metal Shop Evening Technician

STATUS:  Full Time, 35 Hours per week, 9 months per year
DIVISION: Academic Facilities
REPORTS TO: Wood Shop + Metal Shop Manager



The Wood / Metal Shop Technician is responsible for helping to oversee and maintain the Wood and Metal Shop in Academic facilities. The Technician assists in the support of students, staff, and faculty in curricular needs in addition to providing training in the safe and effective use of wood shop and metal shop tools, equipment, and machinery. This position will require working in the facility where classes are scheduled and will change with curricular demands and scheduling. Position will consistently work 35 hours per week Monday-Friday from 3pm-11pm. Some weekends may be required.



  • Provide service and observe the needs of students and faculty utilizing wood shop, metal shop, and foundry facilities in the fulfillment of their curricular purpose.
  • Be proactive in their attention to students and facility needs.
  • Assist in routine and unanticipated maintenance/repair of shop tools and equipment.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of work study students.
  • Assist in safety programs and procedures to ensure the proper use of tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Maintain clean and effective work spaces.
  • Ensure OSHA safety regulations are being observed and maintained.
  • Other duties as assigned and needed.


  • Bachelors’ degree required, Master’s preferred. Equivalent and relevant work experience will be considered.
  • One to three years of experience in a variety of woodworking, metalworking, foundry, model making, and art processes.
  • Must be “hands on” with a strong understanding of a variety materials and have excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • High degree of craftsmanship and finish capabilities.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Aptitude for learning new skills and techniques.
  • Able to work effectively with a diverse student, staff and faculty populace of varying abilities.
  • Academic environment experience preferred.
  • Computer proficiency necessary, 3D CAD and Laser Cutter experience preferred.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50lbs.


This job operates in a professional office and college campus environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving parts, and vibration. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions.


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Must be able to climb ladders. The employee must frequently lift and move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
