Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loans

Direct Unsubsidized loans are lower fixed interest rate loans provided by the federal government to assist students with the costs of education. The government guarantees Direct Unsubsidized loans, so no cosigner or credit check is necessary. The amount of Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans are set by the Department of Education. The amounts listed on your financial aid notification letter reflect your specific eligibility.

All CCS students are eligible if they meet the following criteria. 

  1. Completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),
  2. Registered for, or accepted for, a minimum of 6.0 credit hours at CCS each semester,
  3. Are currently making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards a degree

The federal government guarantees Direct Unsubsidized loans, so no cosigner or credit check is necessary to receive them. You simply need to meet the criteria listed above, and complete the steps listed below.

Unsubsidized loans are non-need based loans in which interest begins to accrue as soon as the loan is disbursed. The student can choose to pay the interest while in school, or wait until after they have left school. Accumulated interest will capitalize, so it is recommended that students pay some or all of the interest while in school to keep their balance and subsequent monthly payments lower.

This the maximums you may borrow. You are encouraged to borrow less whenever possible.

Graduate students can borrow an aggregate max of $138,500 over the lifetime of their education, which includes loans borrowed and not repaid for Certificate, Associate, Bachelor or Graduate programs.

Unsubsidized Federal Loan – Fixed rate of 4.53% (for loans disbursed July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2020).

A 1.059% (for loans disbursed October 1, 2019 – September 30, 2020) origination fee is deducted from Direct loans before disbursement.

Repayment begins six months after students leave school or drop below half-time enrollment (less than 6.0 credits). Students with unsubsidized loans may want to consider making payments on the accumulating interest while they are still in school. For more information about repayment, visit Federal Student Aid.

To accept the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, student should follow these steps:

  1. Log into Self Service, using your CCS login information. Once logged in, select “Financial Aid” and select the Award Year you are registered in. You will then click on the “Review and Accept your Financial Aid Award Package” link. You will scroll down to your loan eligibility section and select “Accept or Reject”.
  2. Once you have accepted the Direct Unsubsidized Loan, you will be prompted to complete Entrance Loan Counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note. Both of these requirements that are required by the Department of Education and completed online at StudentLoans.gov. Before your loan disbursements is released to the school and applied to your account balance, both of these requirements need to be completed and submitted.

Direct Unsubsidized loan funds are disbursed directly to CCS, generally through an electronic funds transfer. Total award will be split equally between the Fall and Winter semesters.

Loan funds must be first used toward the balance owed at CCS. If funds remain after the balance is paid, a refund check will be issued for the excess by the CCS Business Services Office. These funds should be used only for valid educational expenses, such as books & supplies, rent, food and transportation.
