Ad students win Best New Ad competition

Advertising seniors Kelly McGuckin and Brian Mekjian took first place honors in the annual Best New Ad Competition ( with their humorous television commercial for this yearâ??s client, Cell Phones for Soldiers. The spot cleverly reminds viewers that among the many forgotten items you may have under the bed (and elsewhere in your home) could be a cell phone you no longer need or want. When you â??Flip the Flip,â? donate these phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, the money that the organization receives for recycling them is used to purchase phone cards that are given to soldiers stationed around the world to help them remain in touch with loved ones. In addition, seniors Jason Ray and Kyle Watson received an Honorable Mention for their commercial portraying the â??invisible armorâ? that Cell Phones for Soldiers provides to the military through continued communication with loved ones back home. These students and others in Assistant Professor Ryan Anselâ??s Advertising Studio II course conceived, wrote, directed\ and filmed the commercials along with print, out-of-home, and digital advertising as their first assignment in the fall 2011 class. In notifying Ansel of the award, Corrine Donewald, Director of Campus Relations for, commented, â??I want to personally congratulate you and your students (Brian Mekjian and Kelly McGuckin) for winning the Video contest for Cell Phones for Soldiers! â?¦ We are so proud of your students.â?¦We are grateful for your participation and hope this was beneficial to all of your students.â?
