Opera Innovator and MacArthur Fellow Yuval Sharon Presents “Invisible Cities”

New York Times has called “opera’s disrupter in residence” will present a screening of The Industry’s interdisciplinary production of “Invisible Cities,” an operatic adaptation of the novel by Italo Calvino. Originally staged in Los Angeles’ Union Station in 2013, the opera was produced for wireless headphones.
The program with Sharon also includes a behind-the-scenes look at “Invisible Cities” and “Hopscotch,” — a 2015 production that unfolds across Los Angeles in 24 vehicles — and a conversation with Sharon moderated by Interaction Design faculty member Rinat Sherzer. Q&A will follow.

Yuval Sharon is the founder and artistic director of The Industry, an artist-driven, collaborative opera company that produces operatic, musical, visual and immersive experiences in both traditional and non-traditional settings. Sharon is currently artist-in-residence at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where his projects include newly commissioned works, site-specific installations, and performances outside the hall. Productions include an original setting of “War of the Worlds”; a staging of Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde” with Gustavo Dudamel; and a new production of Meredith Monk’s “ATLAS”. Sharon was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2017.
