Product Design Senior Honored in International Furniture Design Competition

Ornella Gorgees (’18, Product Design) has received an honorable mention in the 2017 Contemporary-Modern Furniture Design Competition. She is a top five finalist in the student competition sponsored by the International Furnishings and Design Association Educational Foundation and Cliff Young LTD.

Gorgees’ design will be displayed at the “What’s New, What’s Next” event at the New York Design Center in September.

The competition challenged students to create a modern furniture design that uses sophisticated and innovative materials, textures and finishes while maintaining classic lines. Inspired by the fluid aesthetic of the late architect Zaha Hadid, Gorgees’ eco-friendly bench seating is appropriate for a variety of public spaces. “I didn’t want to create something that would interfere with its environment,” said Gorgees, “and I wanted the seating to encourage interaction and communication.”

Gorgees’ entry was one of 65 from 24 schools and universities around the world.
