Resources for Faculty & Staff

As the college transitions from face-to-face instruction and office spaces to virtual classrooms and workspaces, we are committed to supporting our faculty and staff. Our goal is to continue providing students with a high-quality education and support services without undue risk to our campus community. Below you will find resources for teaching and working remotely.

Teaching Remotely

The Center for Excellence in Creative Teaching and Learning has put together a plan that includes a variety of tools and resources to maintain contact with your department and your students and to move your teaching online.

Course Continuity Plan

Onsite teaching during Michigan's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Order

On Monday, March 23, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order temporarily suspending all nonessential in-person operations across the state. The order took effect at 12:01 am Tuesday, March 24, 2020, and extends for at least the next three weeks. The “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order directs all Michiganders to stay in their homes unless it is absolutely necessary for them to be out. However, the order also permits organizations to designate key workers who are necessary to conducting “minimal basic operations.” Faculty who require special access to campus teaching facilities in order to conduct class have been designated as key to CCS. Those faculty must contact their Department Chairs immediately to notify them as to what areas of campus they will need to access and the specific dates, times, and durations they will need to have that access. Department Chairs will provide this information to Aletha Jordan who will inform Campus Safety. Faculty will be required to check in with Campus Safety upon their arrival in order to access CCS facilities. While on campus, faculty must observe the social distancing guidelines set forth by the Governor. Once their teaching responsibilities have been fulfilled, faculty must leave. Adherence to this directive is required in order for CCS to be in compliance with the Executive Order and the health, safety, and welfare of all concerned.

Center for Excellence in Creative Teaching and Learning (ECTL)

    • We have added LinkedIn Learning videos for Zoom, Teaching Online, and Managing this Situation to our Blackboard Organization page. Zoom has also developed its own series of help videos, which can be found in the upper right part of your “Meetings” page when you log into your Zoom account.

Additional Blackboard tutorials and documentation have also been added, so please check out the Blackboard Guides page in the Organization.

Other Resources

At a webinar on faculty resilience conducted by the Chronicle of Higher Education, it was noted that one of the key strategies for making sure that all students have access to your course materials is to record your Zoom presentations. Even if you are holding your classes "live," you should be recording them so that students, particularly those in other time zones and those with special needs, can access them. Contact the Center for Excellence in Creative Teaching and Learning for instruction on recording your Zooms.

We also heard from Kevin Gannon, Professor of History and Director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Grand View University on "How to Make Your Online Pivot Less Brutal." Key takeaways from Kevin include:

  • Good teaching is good teaching: Good pedagogy requires Regular, effective, and compassionate communication with students; Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances; and Transparency in course materials, like tests, assignments, and activities.
  • Keep it as simple and as accessible as you can: Moving from face-to-face to distance learning is disruptive enough. Don't introduce complicated, unnecessary tools and procedures.
  • Expect turbulence and respond accordingly: As Kevin observed in his talk, "This is not the semester we ordered." The same goes for our students. We will all need to make adjustments as we go along.
  • Online doesn't have to mean impersonal: Teaching and learning are inherently social enterprises. Technology doesn't teach, teachers do. Your experiences and expertise is why you are in the classroom. By the same token, keep in mind that your students are also experiencing something new and unprecedented as we move through the semester. Err on the side of compassion.

As many of us shift to working from home, the Information Technology Services team put together a few resources to help. Direct links can be found on the Information Technology Services page on the Blackboard 'Campus Offices' tab and this page.

The working from home page contains a variety of information to help make things go smoother. Among the items you may wish to review are:

  • Accessing Filr
Access your home and shared drives via the web.
  • Using Your CCS Phone
Check voice mail remotely, change greetings, etc. Important Note: At this time, please do not set up call forwarding to an outside line. If you currently have it set, please cancel the forwarding for now. We’ve experienced issues with phone circuits filling up due to this feature, particularly at the Taubman Center. We’re working on an alternate solution for this and hope to have additional information available in the next several days.
  • Online Meetings with Zoom and Google
Getting started with either online meeting platform.
  • Colleague, ImageNow, Informer
For those staff authorized by their supervisor to access internal systems from home, you should have received an email invitation from RealVNC to set up an account. Detailed instructions are available on VNC Remote Walk Through page.

If you encounter difficulty or have questions, the best way of contacting us for now is via helpdesk ticket

As cases of coronavirus continue to spread across the U.S., health care leaders are encouraging patients to use telehealth options in order to access virtual care. For those of you who participate in one of the college's health care plans, please see the link below for instructions on how to access telehealth care. It is best to complete this process before you or your covered dependent needs it.

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be stressful for people. Fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children. Finding ways to cope with stress will make you, the people you care about, and your community stronger.

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. How you respond to the outbreak can depend on your background, the things that make you different from other people, and the community you live in.

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can include:

  • Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Worsening of chronic health problems
  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs
