Cathy Gendron began her illustration career as Creative Services Manager for the Ann Arbor News. She joined the Detroit Free Press as Art Director in 1984, and since 1988 she has pursued her passions for painting and teaching by combining a successful freelance illustration career with a position of adjunct instructor at CCS.

Professional Experience

Cathy’s paintings have appeared in numerous publications for the editorial, book and corporate markets, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Dallas Morning News, Newsweek, US News and World Reports, Utne Reader, Seventeen, McGraw Hill, Penguin/Random House, Simon & Schuster, Kensington Publishing, IBM, Target and Saatchi & Saatchi.

Significant Publications, Presentations and Exhibitions

2015 – Along with three recent graduates of CCS, she designed and painted the largest mural in Ann Arbor, Enduring Roots.

2015 – Illustrations for children’s picture book, The Nutcracker Comes to America: How Three Ballet-Loving Brothers Created a Holiday Tradition, by Chris Barton.

2016 – Conference Presenter for the Michigan chapter of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators.

2019 – She has recently finished illustrations for her second children’s book, Trees Make Perfect Pets, by Paul Czajak, slated for publication in the spring of 2020.

Cathy has won awards from, among others, Communications Arts Magazine, Society of Illustrators LA, Print Magazine, Society of Publications Designers and the Detroit Creative Directors Council.

She is a past board member of the Ann Arbor Art Center and served for 6 years on the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission, which oversees public art projects for the City of Ann Arbor.
