Designing with a sense of place, with particular interest to materials that are regarded as fringe, waste and bi-product.
After working for over a decade within the fashion industry, including having her own boutique in Brooklyn, NY, Melanie McClintock accepted an artist residency-turned-teaching position in the Fashion Design Department at VCUQatar in Doha, Qatar. There, alongside teaching, she became the Design Project Manager at VCUQatar’s Center of Research, Design and Entrepreneurship. Through this position she spearheaded and then directed a two-year, cross-cultural social art program in Java, Indonesia, where she collaborated with local graffiti artists and vocational high school students to increase creativity and innovation in textiles and ceramics. A growing interest in footwear led her from Indonesia to Italy, where she took courses at Domus Academy and Polimoda, and finally onto Detroit, where she completed a Masters program in Color and Materials Design at the College for Creative Studies, with a focus on footwear. Upon graduation, she accepted a teaching position within the Color and Materials Design Program.
