With “design-roots” in the built environment, but a career that has let her dabble in just about every discipline, Sarah is a Design Strategist and Futurist that is deeply invested in the democratization of design and strategic foresight (or “Futures”).

She works for her fellow humans. Not for design/tech/brands/etc. – but for the person on the other side of what we create – with extra enthusiasm for work that involves the public sector, civic spaces, nature/outdoor recreation, parenthood, education and women’s empowerment.

Professional Experience

With an interdisciplinary background and over 13 years of industry experience, Sarah thrives at the intersection of design thinking and business strategy – helping people deeply understand those they serve, how to figure out what to make or do next, why it’s important and how to communicate that. She is also a certified Futurist – helping stretch imaginations beyond typical time horizons to envision possible, probable and preferred futures.

In her current job as a CX Strategist and Civic Design Coach, Sarah works with government leaders and their community partners to experiment with and design new services, processes, and policies. In the past few years she has worked with innovation teams at the City of Durham and the City of Detroit as well as 14 other North American cities in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Centre for Public Impact, tackling complex systemic issues such as improving economic opportunities for returning citizens; creating equitable early childhood education and after-school care infrastructure; and improving high-speed internet access.

Sarah joined College for Creative Studies as an adjunct graduate studies professor in 2021 and currently teaches Design Thinking. She has previously taught the Future Cities studio at CCS as well as a Design Research and Design Process undergraduate class at Wayne State University.
